Assessment of ocean wave spectrum using global Envisat/ASAR data and hindcast simulation

چکیده

Wave mode of spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is designed for the global ocean wave observations. Despite fact that significant height inferred from SAR measurements has been validated against model output and in-situ data, SAR's primary unique capability operational 2-dimensional spectral description sea state remains to be fully evaluated. In this study, we extended previous assessment approaches by introducing a new image parameter, Mean rAnge Cross-Spectrum (MACS) focuses on isolated scales along line-of-sight direction. MACS an efficient variable in it characterizes local spectra properties without need non-linear inversion procedure. The based multiple-year data acquired Envisat/ASAR mode, with collocated WaveWatch III (WW3) hindcast buoy-observed spectra, which forward transformation systematically performed obtain simulated spectra. Inter-comparison between SAR-measured WW3-simulated demonstrates consistency wavelength (or wavenumber) dependent. Three typical wavelengths, around 62 m windsea, 168 intermediate waves 342 swell, are selected present comparison detail. Comparable magnitude observed while larger simulation values predicted windsea waves. Spatial distribution agrees well these two sets all wavelengths high correlation coefficients (>0.8) most ocean. One exception extratropics where quantitative difference particularly notable. contrary, when comparing buoys-simulated MACS, agreement increases towards shorter (<100 m) wavelengths. We also found large-scale atmospheric/oceanic features persistent images lead overestimate at long expected bias inversion. retrieval performance shall advance as such impact properly resolved.

assessment of the efficiency of s.p.g.c refineries using network dea

data envelopment analysis (dea) is a powerful tool for measuring relative efficiency of organizational units referred to as decision making units (dmus). in most cases dmus have network structures with internal linking activities. traditional dea models, however, consider dmus as black boxes with no regard to their linking activities and therefore do not provide decision makers with the reasons...

Toward an internal gravity wave spectrum in global ocean models

High-resolution global ocean models forced by atmospheric fields and tides are beginning to display realistic internal gravity wave spectra, especially as model resolution increases. This paper examines internal waves in global simulations with 0.08° and 0.04° (~8 and 4 km) horizontal resolutions, respectively. Frequency spectra of internal wave horizontal kinetic energy in the North Pacific li...

Wave Hindcast Study of the Caspian Sea

The significant effect of waves on coastal and marine activities urges the precise identification of wave characteristics using field measurements, theoretical studies, physical modeling or numerical simulations. In order to study thoroughly the wave climate in the Caspian Sea, a wave modeling and hindcast project was performed by Iranian National Center for Oceanography. In this study, one of ...

Global ocean mean wave period data: Validation and description

[1] A global comparison of altimeter and ERA-40 mean wave period data is performed for the first time. Altimeter and ERA-40 mean wave period are shown to compare well in non-swell-dominated conditions. Triply collocated altimeter, buoy, and ERA-40 data show that the variance of the random errors is bigger for the ERA-40 data and smaller for the buoy data. A new expression is given to relate alt...

Realistic simulation of ocean surface using wave spectra

We present a method to simulate ocean surfaces away from the coast, with correct statistical wave height and direction distributions. By using classical oceanographic parametric wave spectra, our results fit real world measurements, without depending on them. Since wave spectra are independent of the ocean model, Gerstner parametric equations and Fourier transform method can be used with them. ...
